Troubleshooting Life 282, October 8 - Once in a while, decide to embrace the gift of sobriety

Reader, I do not drink alcohol often. I prefer Coca-Cola because it is delicious.

Whatever drink you prefer, hard or soft, pleasure feels good.

Comfort feels good. Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphins, the whole DOSE.

It’s dope.

But when you are in a scenario where you must order a drink at a bar or restaurant, do not feel peer pressured into drinking! Unless you want to.

Happy 62nd wedding anniversary, Dadi and Daddy. Happy 61st birthday, Papa.

Excerpt From The Daily Drucker, October 8 “Is a Decision Necessary?”

Peter F. Drucker with Joseph A. Maciariello

“One does not make unnecessary decisions any more than a good surgeon does unnecessary surgery”

Three rules used by surgeons when making decisions.

  1. “In a condition that is likely to cure itself or to stabilize itself without risk or danger or great pain to the patient, you put it on watch and check regularly. But you don’t cut. To do surgery in such a condition is an unnecessary decision”

  2. “If the condition is degenerative or life-threatening and there is something you can do, you do it—fast and radically. It is a necessary decision despite the risk.”

  3. “This is the problem in between, and it’s probably the largest single category—the condition that is not degenerative and not life-threatening but still not self-correcting and quite serious. This is where the surgeon has to weigh opportunity against risk. And it is this decision that distinguishes the first-rate surgeon from the also-ran.”
