A.M. on AI, Embracing a New Way of Work: "Like MegaMan helping Lan with his homework"

Maybe one day cybersecurity will look like this, and ten year olds with “divine” AI will fight evil grown men like this game.

Good afternoon on this May 2, 2023!

Here are some headlines I saw in LinkedIn news today:

Vice Media Prepares to File for Bankruptcy, WSJ

Writers strike cues late night pivot, CNN

Amazon Studios, Prime Video Lay Off 100 Staffers, Variety

Why is the title “every company is a tech company?”

"We have technology that's integrated into everything we do," says Gomez, student at Per Scholas.

"So even every day seeing layoff, layoff, layoff, I've been studying, studying."

"If you view technology as a function, then I am not as worried about all of the layoffs at Meta or Google, for example, because there are other companies across various sectors that still need this talent,"

-Plinio Ayala, Per Scholas CEO

Embrace New Ways Of Working

- CIO Stephenie Stone writes for Forbes about her experience making clean rooms for semiconductor people, providing engineers with integrated lean design construction methods that work with subcontractors, partners, even competitors. One room! Insane!

(We all know what it is like working with friend + enemy or “frenemies,” right?)

“As a result, it's become common over the last two years for our employees to work on collaborative job sites where clients, suppliers and competitors are in the same workspace on the same networks. And it’s up to IT to keep all the work products for each group safe and secure.”

Yeah, imagine Apple and Amazon and Google working together on a common goal.

Stephenie’s advice really matters in those types of scenarios.

Embracing ChatGPT, The “MegaMan” to my Lan at Work

Today I, and the learners in the AWS re/Start 2023-RTT-14 cycle that I am substitute teaching right now, successfully embraced ChatGPT as a new way of teaching and studying in Zoom class.

We asked ChatGPT questions like:

  • “what is aws sns topic”

  • “give me an example of sns topic”

  • “how can i integrate cloudwatch and cloudtrail in aws”

I knew the answer to the first two questions already. I just did not want to type out an explanation and think critically of an example of AWS SNS for a Zoom chat question when supporting my colleague’s lesson.

As an instructor, GPT helped me by giving me helpful text I could copy and paste to answer a question quickly and maintain class flow.

The last question “how can i integrate cloudwatch and cloudtrail in aws” came from a student to me and my teammate in Zoom chat.

GPT gave me step by step instructions on how to implement the two specified AWS technologies, which I then shared with the class to help them in their AWS re/Start training.

After this experience, I said to class: “hey, you all should try asking ChatGPT questions, or Amazon CodeWhisperer in AWS.”

ChatGPT, and many more, AI will hit the market. Just you wait.

Maybe the world will become like MegaMan Battle Network video games.

I almost went blind playing MMBN on my Nintendo Game Boy.

Hilarious that Nintendo recently released Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection for Switch as well.

Capitalize on nostalgia of guys like me perhaps, but also because the imagery in this game is top of mind again, as AI enthusiasm takes off.

Embrace new ways of working. New tools. Be visually literate.

AI, like your smartphone, is a “companion” who can tell you about the works of Michelangelo as good as Will Hunting in Good Will Hunting.

But it cannot tell you what it is like to stand in the Sistine Chapel and look up at the beautiful ceiling.

It’s like MegaMan helping Lan with his Michelangelo homework.

MM can help Lan do the questions, but he cannot go there physically and write about how it smells, or the people who are there that day.

Lan (you, the player) has to then go there physically and take notes on the Sistine Chapel (or ask MM to take dictation), and then the job is done.

Your move, chief.
