Troubleshooting Life 178, June 26 - Understand math is how God wrote the universe

This is 1 out of 366 pages from my upcoming book "Troubleshooting Life."

1 page a day, 300 words or less, focused on education, entertainment, or enlightenment.

Mathmagic Land Disney, 1959

Today in 1959, Walt Disney released Donald in Mathmagic Land.

I remember this short film was something my Calculus 1 teacher showed our class in high school, around May 2014 or so, when we were about to graduate.

Walt Disney and his team did some very inspiring work in this.

Connecting math to music starting with Pythagoreans and Pythagoras, the discoveries “in secret” made me laugh.

But it might have been real; science was persecuted at that time.

The harp. How music notes are related to math, the string vibrations.

The basis of our real life music today, the film shows, leaving animations for real life jazz music.

Almost as if to say, “this is not just cartoons, this is real life.”

Music, it makes my mind tap its feet, and dance! Marcus Aurelius would say to steel yourself to this object floating through the air, into the ears, and teasing the impressions of the mind.

Ryan Holiday or a Stoic might say, “do not let it shake your Inner Citadel.”

Stoic philosophy aside, I do love this short, my mind never forgot it.

The strings on a violin.

A pentagram.

The golden rectangle.

Jasmine flowers, starfish, even sports!

The film ends with a quote from Galileo Galilei:

"Mathematics is the alphabet with which God has written the universe".

No wonder how his life and career inspired founders like Steve Jobs, Jason Kilar of Hulu, and Brian Chesky of Airbnb, and likely many others.

ACTION POINT: Understand math is how God wrote the universe
